MP Naturopathy * PANTRY GUIDE

Healthy Pantry swaps

A practitioner guide to reading labels, spotting harmful ingredients, and upgrading the everyday staples in your kitchen.

Most of what lines supermarket shelves is engineered to be cheap, shelf-stable, and highly palatable. The cost? Ingredients that quietly disrupt hormones, inflame the gut lining, and drive up oxidative stress — often hiding behind familiar brand names.

These swaps aren't about perfection. They're about small, informed choices that compound over time. Start with what you use every day: the bottle of sauce in your fridge, the stock cubes in your pantry, the tea bag in your cupboard. Every one of those is an opportunity. All products listed are available to purchase through my Vital.ly practitioner dispensary — scroll to the bottom for the link.

These are the ingredients worth pausing on. You'll find them in almost every processed condiment, drink mix, or powdered supplement on supermarket shelves.

Pantry Swaps

Category 1- Condiments & Sauces

The fridge door is one of the most overlooked sources of seed oils and additives in the everyday diet. Commercial sauces are built on cheap refined oils, glucose syrups, and preservatives — even the "healthy" looking ones.

✕ DITCH

Commercial Tomato Sauce & Ketchup

  • Glucose syrup or HFCS as the 2nd or 3rd ingredient 621

  • Preservative 211 (sodium benzoate) in most brands

  • "Natural flavours" with no disclosure

  • Modified corn starch as thickener

→ SWAP TO

Undivided Food Co. Good Sauce Tomato Ketchup

Made with real tomatoes, no seed oils, no refined sugars

✕  DITCH

Commercial Mayonnaise & Aioli

  • Canola or soybean oil as the #1 ingredient seed oils

  • Sugar added to mask bitterness of cheap oils

  • Preservative 202 and emulsifiers (471)

  • Satay: vegetable oil, glucose syrup, MSG (621)

  • Preservatives 211 across the range

Category 2 - Cooking Fats & Oils

Seed oils are the single most significant source of excess omega-6 linoleic acid in the modern diet. Swapping to stable, minimally processed fats is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make.

✕ DITCH

Vegetable, Canola & Sunflower Oil

  • Extracted using hexane (industrial solvent), then bleached and deodorised

  • Extremely high omega-6:omega-3 ratio — pro-inflammatory in excess

  • Oxidises rapidly with heat, light, and air — generating harmful aldehydes

  • Often from GMO sources (canola, soy)

→ SWAP TO

Hemp Foods

Hemp Gold Seed Oil-

cold-pressed, balanced 3:1 omega-6:3 ratio, ideal for drizzling (not high heat)

✕ DITCH

Margarine & Vegetable Spreads

  • Partially hydrogenated oils → residual trans fats even in "non-trans" products

  • Emulsifiers 471, 472e to mimic butter texture

  • Artificial colour (beta-carotene or annatto) to imitate yellow tone

→ SWAP TO

Best Of The Bone

Beef Tallow —

  • traditional stable saturated fat, high smoke point, excellent for roasting and frying

Category 3 - Hot Drinks & Teas

Conventional tea bags can contain plastic (polypropylene heat-sealing) and pesticide residues. Instant coffee is heavily processed. Commercial hot chocolate mixes are often more sugar and maltodextrin than anything else.

✕ DITCH

Commercial Hot Chocolate Mixes

  • Sugar or glucose syrup as primary ingredient

  • Maltodextrin as filler — GI higher than table sugar

  • Artificial flavours and emulsifiers

  • Processed milk powder (oxidised cholesterol)

→ SWAP TO

ATP Science

  • Noway Collagen Hot Chocolate + Magnesium

Nutra Organics

  • Collagen Hot Chocolate

  • Collagen White Hot Chocolate

  • Collagen Matcha Latte

Mayde Tea

  • Drinking Chocolate

Mayde Tea Matcha —

  • ceremonial-grade, no fillers or additives; a clean L-theanine and caffeine source

✕ DITCH

Instant Coffee, Conventional Tea Bags & Commercial Herbal Tea Blends

Instant coffee:

  • formed at high heat, contains acrylamide — a heat-process carcinogen

Conventional tea bags:

  • polypropylene sealing releases microplastics at brewing temp

Non-organic tea:

  • among the most heavily sprayed crops globally

  • Often bleached paper bags with chlorine residue

Commercial Tea Blends:

  • Often contain "natural flavourings" and citric acid to standardise taste

  • Plastic-sealed bags releasing microplastics into your cup

  • Non-organic: pesticide residues concentrate during drying

  • Added sugars or sweeteners in some "wellness" blends

→ SWAP TO

Not Coffee Original —

  • adaptogenic, coffee-free warm drink

Not Coffee Now —

  • for a lighter moment

Mayde Tea English Breakfast —

  • Peppermint & Licorice

  • Night Time, Feel New, Morning Berry

  • Vanilla Chai & Lemon Ginger Manuka Honey

Mayde Tea Adapt

Category 4 - Sweeteners

Refined white sugar offers nothing but a blood glucose spike. Artificial alternatives disrupt the gut and sweet-taste signalling. Neither is the answer — but a less refined, mineral-containing sweetener is a meaningful step.

✕ DITCH

White Sugar, Artificial Sweeteners & Stevia

  • White sugar: entirely stripped of minerals during refining, pure glycaemic load

  • Aspartame (951): converted to phenylalanine and methanol in the gut

  • Sucralose (955): chlorinated sugar molecule, disrupts microbiome, found in groundwater

  • Acesulfame K (950): carcinogenicity concerns in animal studies

  • Stevia: may inhibit the folate pathway — problematic for those with MTHFR gene variants, potentially contributing to neurological symptoms

→ SWAP TO

  • Power Super Foods Coconut Sugar — lower GI than white sugar, retains trace minerals (zinc, iron, potassium), less processed, mild caramel flavour ideal for baking and coffee

✕ DITCH

Dutch-Processed Cocoa Powder

  • Alkali treatment destroys up to 90% of naturally occurring flavanols

  • Often blended with fillers, maltodextrin, or anti-caking agents

  • Loses the mood, cardiovascular, and cognitive benefits of raw cacao.

→ SWAP TO

  • Power Super Foods Cacao Powder — raw, unalkalised

  • Power Super Foods Cacao Gold Organic Cacao Powder

  • Power Super Foods Cacao Gold Ceremonial Cacao Paste — for rich hot chocolates

Category 5 - Stocks & Broths

Stock cubes are one of the highest-additive items in most pantries — MSG, yeast extract, seed oils, caramel colour, and flavour enhancers are all standard. Real bone broth, by contrast, is a nutrient-dense food that supports collagen synthesis and gut integrity.

✕ DITCH

Commercial Stock Cubes & Powder

  • MSG (621) + yeast extract + ribonucleotides 627/631 — triple flavour-enhancer stack

  • Vegetable oil (seed oil) as a binder

  • Caramel colour 150c/d for visual richness

  • Maltodextrin as filler in powder stocks

  • Palm fat in most cube formats

→ SWAP TO

  • Nutra Organics Chicken Broth Concentrate Natural — dissolves like a stock cube, genuinely clean

  • Gevity RX Bone Broth Body Glue — concentrated, versatile

✕ DITCH

Commercial Bone Broth & Collagen Drinks

  • Often highly diluted — poor collagen content per serve

  • Added "natural flavours" and salt to mask lack of depth

  • Some contain hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP) — a hidden MSG source

  • Long shelf-life packaging suggests significant heat processing

→ SWAP TO

  • Nutra Organics Beef Bone Broth Turmeric

  • Nutra Organics Chicken Bone Broth Garden Herb

  • Best Of The Bone Bone Broth Organic Mushroom

  • Best Of The Bone Bone Broth Probiotic

Category 6 - Superfoods & Daily Nutrition

Most commercial supplements and protein powders contain synthetic compounds your body doesn't recognise in the same way as whole-food sources. These swaps prioritise food-form nutrition — more bioavailable, less burden on the liver.

✕ DITCH

Commercial Protein Powders

  • Artificial sweeteners (955, 950) in almost all "sugar-free" versions

  • Soy protein isolate — heavily processed, high phytate content, potential hormonal disruption

  • Maltodextrin and gums as fillers and texture agents

  • Artificial flavours and colours to achieve "chocolate" taste on cheap base

→ SWAP TO

  • Nutra Organics Clean Plant Protein Chocolate — whole food plant protein, clean ingredient deck

  • Nutra Organics Collagen Protein

  • Nutra Organics Choc Whiz — for kids and families

✕ DITCH

Commercial Greens Powders

  • Maltodextrin as base filler in most budget options

  • Artificial sweeteners to mask bitterness

  • Proprietary blends conceal how little of each ingredient is actually present

  • Heavy metals testing often absent

→ SWAP TO

  • Nutra Organics Clean Greens

  • Nutra Organics Veggie Hero — great for children

  • Nutra Organics Thriving Family

  • Eden Health Foods Superfood

  • Power Super Foods Maca Powder, Beetroot Powder, Organic Chia Seeds, Dulse Flakes

  • Hemp Foods Australian Hemp Seeds & Organic Hemp Seed — sprinkle on smoothies, yoghurt, or salads for a balanced omega fatty acid boost
