What is MTHFR?
The Gene Behind Methylation
MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) is an enzyme encoded by the MTHFR gene. It plays a critical role in processing folate and is essential for the methylation cycle — one of the most fundamental biochemical processes in your body.
Methylation occurs billions of times per second and influences DNA repair, detoxification, neurotransmitter production, immune regulation, and much more. When the MTHFR gene has a variant (often called a "mutation" or SNP), this enzyme may not work as efficiently, potentially impacting many areas of your health.
